This week, Dartmouth Health’s Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center joined a select group of hospitals nationwide when it obtained a state-of-the-art surgical robot used in multiple procedures. DHMC’s da Vinci 5 was delivered Monday and will soon be deployed to improve efficiency, accuracy and patient outcomes.

Made by medical device manufacturer Intuitive, the da Vinci 5 is built upon the clinical and operational value from more than 14 million procedures performed with previous iterations of the da Vinci surgical platform. DHMC is one of only two hospitals in New England to offer da Vinci 5 to patients (the other being Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, MA).

“We are continuously striving to offer the most advanced technology and highest level of precision to our patients, who put their complete trust in our providers and hospital when they come in for surgery,” said Stacey M. Cosco, DNP, vice president of perioperative and surgical services at DHMC. “The Dartmouth Health system has seen great success using earlier models of the da Vinci platform, with surgeons and patients alike reporting high satisfaction with its results. The ability to offer the most cutting-edge version of this technology to our patients in northern New England is a tremendous asset, and ensures DHMC continues to be a robotic leader in our region.”

The da Vinci 5 allows surgeons to see a high-resolution 3D image of the area they are operating on. The platform also incorporates first-of-its-kind force-sensing technology, which allows surgeons to sense and measure the force exerted on tissue during surgery. Preclinical trials of the da Vinci 5 showed surgeons using the device used up to 43% less force to tissue while operating.
