I am delighted that Becker’s has recognized the expert, high-quality care that DHMC offers our patients and communities.
Michael S. Calderwood, MD, MPHDartmouth Health’s Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2024 list of great hospitals in America. Hospitals included in the ranking were selected by Becker’s for their dedication to optimizing healthcare, top-tier clinical work, deep commitment to patient safety, innovative advancements, in-depth research, educational excellence and high levels of patient satisfaction. Other honorees this year include Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Of DHMC, Becker’s noted that the hospital, New Hampshire’s only academic medical center and Level 1 trauma center, provides care for the top 5% of the sickest, most complex patients in the United States. The magazine also noted that DHMC has over 1.6 million outpatient visits, performs nearly 23,000 surgeries, discharges more than 28,000 patients and cares for over 31,000 emergency visits at its emergency department annually. Additionally, Becker’s pointed to the U.S. Department of Labor recognizing DHMC’s workforce development efforts as a leader in the field through the White House-sponsored job training initiative “Upskilling America.”
“I am delighted that Becker’s has recognized the expert, high-quality care that DHMC offers our patients and communities,” said Michael S. Calderwood, MD, MPH, DHMC’s chief quality officer. “We take great pride in ushering in medical breakthroughs, offering the most cutting-edge treatments and technology, and staffing the most accomplished clinicians in their respective fields—without losing the personal, caring touch our patients expect, right in their backyard, in one of America’s most rural areas. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of our teams who have earned and deserve this distinction.”
The Becker’s editorial team chose hospitals for inclusion in the list based on analyses of their recent achievements, including rankings and ratings such as U.S. News & World Report rankings, Healthgrades awards, CMS star ratings and The Leapfrog Group safety grades.
